Darcelle, the iconic drag queen of Portland for the past four decades, isn’t going anywhere. But a new troupe in sequins and heavy makeup — Sissyboy — is starting to tear up the night scene. Can it achieve the must-see tourist appeal of Darcelle (Walter Cole when not in makeup)?
Several generations of mothers and daughters (and brave husbands and boyfriends) have trooped to the Darcelle XV club in Old Town, as if it’s a day trip to Powell’s Books. Darcelle rides in parades and is feted by politicians. She’s an icon in most of the city’s tourist brochures.
