Small exhibit of Oliver Herring pieces leave a big impression

It’s one of smallest shows you’ll ever see, a “micro-survey,” as Frist Center for the Visual Arts curator Mark Scala calls it. Yet Common Threads – sculpture, mixed-media and video by Oliver Herring – leaves a big impression.

Gloria, a 2004 sculpture constructed of digital prints on foamboard, is the first piece to catch one’s eye. Leaning in a corner of a transparent cube, with ruffled floral halter dress, chipped nail polish and curly, wiry hair, the piece is astoundingly realistic.
