She gave and gave, until she had nothing left to give. That is the tagline from the 1979 movie The Rose, starring Bette Midler, whose performance was nominated for an Oscar. The film tells the story of a rock star, Mary Foster, whose life is complicated by a brilliant career and the pitfalls of fame.
This month, Foster will appear onstage in Kansas City, but this time, she will be played by Spencer Brown, in a production he wrote. The Rose: The 30th Anniversary Musical is directed by Ron Megee and produced by Chadwick Brooks through the Urban Culture Project.
