Students Call for Gender Recognition Laws for Transgender People

Dublin – The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) again highlighted last night the “vital human rights implications” of a High Court ruling on the right of an individual who has undergone gender reassignment to be recognised as female on her birth certificate.

Dr. Lydia Foy v. the Registrar General was to have been decided last month, but a ruling in the case was postponed; judgement is now expected today (Friday October 19).

“The question before the High Court was whether the Registrar General acted unlawfully in refusing to give official recognition to the correct gender of a reassigned individual,” USI gay and lesbian spokesperson Sonya Donnelly said last night.

“A ruling that favours Dr. Foy is the correct judgement.
