Are single-sex spaces an outmoded concept in today?s increasingly queer world?
Last week, transgender activist Norrie May-Welby was turned away from the cruise lounge of sex-on-premises venue, The Pleasure Chest, because it operates a men-only policy and May-Welby identifies as androgynous. Other venues operate similar policies on the grounds that they provide safe spaces where men can meet other men, but when it comes to transsexual, transgendered and other sex- and gender-variant people, the notion of single-sex or single-gendered spaces becomes a minefield.
