Thanjavur: Tamil Nadu might be the first in the country to give an estimated one lakh transexuals in the state a ‘T’ status. But society continues to harass the third gender as was evident in Thanjavur, where the house of a transexual was set on fire on Monday night.

Exhausted after a ‘Karagattam’ (a folk art) performance at a temple festival in nearby Pattukottai, about 80m km from Thanjavur, Ramya (35), a transsexual, and five of her friends were fast asleep in their thatched house at Valluvar Nagar in Keezha Alangam, Thanjavur, on Monday night. At around 2.30 a.m., they felt the searing heat and woke up in panic to find the roof on fire.
