It’s the first day of a new semester and students are worrying about the usual: getting to class on time, finding the right room and bringing the right books. But for Max Wallace, the first day of classes presents an entirely different set of worries.
As a female-to-male transgender student at Tulane, Wallace depends on the good will of his professors to call him by his chosen name. On the first day of fall semester, one of Wallace’s professors revealed to his entire class that he was transgender.
