Jakarta – An organization for transvestites plans to participate in events marking Indonesia’s Independence Day this week, a newspaper reported Tuesday.
About 265 members of the Yogyakarta Transvestites Organization, based in the historic city on central Java, will participate in sports and stage performances there to raise social awareness as Indonesia on Friday marks its 62nd anniversary of independence from the Netherlands, The Jakarta Post reported.
Homosexuality is still considered taboo in Muslim-majority Indonesia, and gay, lesbian and transvestite groups are subject to harassment and occasionally physical abuse by police and religious groups.
