AIDS activist to mark 50 years as impersonator
Tonight, all eyes will be on Tula.
After 50 years as a performer, the local female impersonator can still command an audience. And tonight, as she has done so many times before, Tula will stand in the spotlight at After Dark Nightclub – her rhinestone jewelry catching glimmers of stage light – raise a graceful hand and begin to pantomime along to a song sung by Shirley Bassey.
“But still I’d give my heart,” she’ll entreat the audience. “I’d do it all again. I’d do it all again.”
