In 2001, when Angela Nichols sent an e-mail to University of Minnesota Duluth faculty and staff about a drag show on campus, she got some interesting responses.
“People actually e-mailed me back and said, ‘What is drag? What are you dragging? Is there a drag race in the ballroom?’ ” she said. “It was an opportunity to explain what drag is; a very short-form performance art.”
In its seventh year of biannual shows, confusion has morphed into capacity crowds, said Nichols, director of Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender Services at UMD.
