Transgender restrooms
I speak frequently on employment discrimination issues in California. Since California amended its fair employment laws to protect gender identity (e.g. trans-gendered folks), at every speaking event where the change in law is discussed, someone raises the issue with what to do about restrooms. From the perspective of someone whose college dorms had gender neutral bath and toilet areas (with enclosed stalls), I have never quite understood the horror with which some women greet the prospect of sharing a work restroom with someone who once had (or currently has) a penis. I personally have never encountered a womens’ restroom at a work site that does not have enclosed toilet areas. Women do not seem to have a problem with unisex restrooms at gas stations, small restaurants, or their own homes. So, I never know quite how to answer these questions — I attempt to sympathize with the questioner while subtly tring to dispell some of what I perceive to be pure prejudice against folks because of their gender identity. I then advise not to worry about the issue unless it actually comes up.
