Kate Bornstein was born in 1948 in New Jersey as a boy named Albert Bornstein. She studied theater arts at Brown University and later wrote for San Francisco’s Bay Area Reporter. Bornstein also created performance art, as well as one-woman shows.

In 1986, Bornstein had sexual reassignment surgery to transition from male to female.
