In the opening act of the experimental new Danish film Soap, Charlotte (Trine Dyrholm) has walked out on a boring failed love affair with an abusive young doctor, Kristian (Frank Thiel). Renting in a rundown complex, Charlotte finds herself turning for small favors to her reclusive crossdressing downstairs neighbor, Veronica (David Dencik). The two strangers develop an unsettling sexual chemistry that defies the huge differences in their temperaments and daily routines ? Charlotte runs a beauty-care business, while Veronica turns tricks with masochistic male clients who like being bullied by a “chick with a dick,” even if she is looking to have it removed. It’s an unsettling mix of spoof and gender melodrama that is enhanced by excellent chemistry between the two leads.
