Transgendered candidate runs in Maryland

Chevy Chase, Md. – A retired eye surgeon is trying to become the first transgender state legislator in Maryland.

Dana Beyer of Chevy Chase is seeking a Democratic nomination for the House of Delegates from a district that includes liberal Washington suburbs like Silver Spring and Kensington, the Washington Post reported. She is one of seven candidates for three spots on the ballot.

Beyer, 54, was a man named Wayne until 2003. She said her sex change was partly responsible for her decision to seek public office, and that she has made no effort to hide it — although she does not want her status to be the focal point of her campaign.
