Police have taken on a specialist officer to deal with homophobic crime in London’s East End.

She is Pc Melanie Conneely, Tower Hamlets’ new dedicated officer for two days a week dealing with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.

This Saturday (July 7) sees her first ‘patrol’ with a police support officers to gay clubs and pubs to speak to revellers and hand out leaflets about reporting hate crimes.

She told the Advertiser: “We want people to know they don’t have to go to the police station to report crimes or ask for advice.

“Being gay, transgender or bisexual is another thing that makes people different from the mainstream.
