A Big Fan of Trans Week

I recently had the pleasure of going out to coffee with a former high school student of mine. Over the past four years at college, he’s done what most young adults do…become mature, confident, and more at home in his own skin. He’s also figured out that he’s a guy. When he was my student, he was a girl.

OK, maybe you’re thinking WEIRD right now. Well, fine. Think it.

Now get over it.

Because, like most out-of-the-ordinary things in our lives, it only seems “weird” because we’re not used to it. But I tell you, if you had spent those two hours talking to my former student, you would have thought: What an articulate, funny, and pleasant young man – transgendered, perhaps, if you’d realized it – but certainly outgoing, smart, compassionate, engaging. Which was exactly as he’d been in high school, only more so because, like I said, he was more confident, more at home in his own skin.
