Kuala Lumpur (Bernama) – Their cries and pleas to be treated with respect and dignity keep falling on deaf ears. The transsexuals in Malaysia are truly children of the lesser God, to put it bluntly.
They say the government is indifferent towards them. The existence of transsexuals or mak nyah as they are known here seems to be of no significance to the government.
Indeed it is an irony that for a caring nation like Malaysia, it has yet to show empathy towards the mak nyah.
“It amazes me that other more conservative Muslim countries like Iran, Kuwait and Egypt have beaten Malaysia when it comes to showing compassion for mak nyahs,” said Associate Professor Dr Teh Yik Koon, author of the book “The Mak Nyahs – Malaysian Male To Female Transsexuals”.
Indeed, Dr Teh’s remark would serve the Malaysian government well to ponder over its reluctance to reflect compassion towards every Malaysian, be they straight, gay, transsexual or transvestite.
