Pride Festival celebrates diversity with nearly 100 events

This year’s Vancouver Pride Festival, kicking off today and raging until next Sunday, Aug. 5, features nearly 100 events — yep, our gay and lesbian community knows how to party! — from Amateur Drag Night to Chicks Ahoy, one of nine themed cruises. The pinnacle of this 10-day love-in is, of course, next Sunday’s Pride Parade. Details of this gargantuan celebration and daily highlights follow.

Today: Pride in Art is a two-week art exhibition and performance festival at the Roundhouse Community Centre (Davie & Pacific), until Aug. 14. The art show, titled Gender Twist, features artists’ expressions of what gender means to them. Six nights of live performances begin with Jodaiko female Taiko group, Aug. 1. Local and visiting writers read their raciest material at Queerotica, Aug. 8. Check out PrideInArt.ca for other performances.
