Gay community questions handling, by paramedics, investigators

The Ottawa police Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Liaison Committee will host a meeting tonight to respond to mounting community concerns following an assault that left an area drag queen in hospital.

Staff Sgt. John Medeiros of the Ottawa police race relations and diversity section said the meeting is intended as a chance to “clear the air” after several members of Ottawa’s gay community questioned police and paramedic handling of a May 26 assault that left Michael Marcil in a coma with serious head injuries.

Mr. Marcil, whose alter ego Dixie Landers is a well-known performer in Ottawa gay clubs, was badly injured after getting into a fight with a woman and another man on the patio outside the Centretown Pub.
