Once upon a time, being gay was considered more than just taboo.

It was labeled a mental illness.

Up until the 1970s, the American Psychological Association’s manual of psychiatric disorders included homosexuality in its pages.

The gay community, including homosexual psychiatrists and other supporters, rallied hard against the label, which they considered baseless and stigmatizing.

The outcry did not fall on deaf ears: In 1973, a majority of the association voted to delete homosexuality from the manual of disorders.
