Trans homeless forced to choose between shelter, identity

Akasha Harding’s face is drawn and her eyes are sad.

In a dark storage room at the Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless filled with stacks of unused desks and piles of dirty clothes, she sits on a plastic chair and speaks in a monotone voice. Shouts can be overhead from shelter clients walking outside along the building. In the main room, hundreds of men crowd together, some sitting around tables playing cards as they pass the rainy day inside.
