Unisex washrooms benefit student privacy

Washrooms in universities across Canada may start to offer transgender facilities, thanks to a national campaign to accommodate students requiring additional privacy.

The campaign is calling for additional washrooms to be installed on campuses that are open to students of all genders.

The washrooms would be single-stalled facilities providing the privacy needed by students.

Originally the campaign was thought to represent transgender students only, but some say the call for unisex washrooms benefits all students.

?It was thought that these washrooms would be exclusively for transgendered students. That is not true,? said Chris Wright, education and campaign manager for Rye-Pride, Ryerson University?s gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered student group.
