Maywood, Calif. The Maywood City Council, responding to complaints from residents, called on the state attorney general’s office to investigate claims of sexual misconduct, racism and brutality among the mostly Latino city’s 37-officer police force, it was reported Thursday.
Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, also urged the City Council to take action to address a growing list of alleged misdeeds, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Residents have claimed that officers beat people up, and several women said police stalked and sexually abused them, according to a document obtained by The Times. One mother claimed that her 14-year-old daughter was groped by an officer.
In the past, the department was criticized for large-scale afternoon sobriety checks that opponents say are designed to catch unlicensed illegal immigrants and generate money. Nearly 2,000 cars a year were impounded from immigrants, before the city banned the operations a few years ago.
