Transgender Day of Visibility

Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) is a day for transgender people and their allies to take action and bring attention to the discrimination faced by transgender people around the world. The day also aims to celebrate transgender people’s accomplishments and raise awareness of the challenges the trans community still faces.

When is Transgender Day of Visibility?

Transgender Day of Visibility is observed each year on March 31st. Each year, transgender people and their allies come together on this day to celebrate transgender people and work towards creating a more inclusive world for transgender people.

Where is Transgender Day of Visibility Observed?

Although Transgender Day of Visibility was founded in Michigan, the day is now observed internationally. Many countries worldwide recognize TDOV and that number is growing each year.

History of Transgender Day of Visibility

The first Transgender Day of Visibility was observed on March 31, 2009. Transgender activist Rachel Crandall founded the day in order to “celebrate transgender people and our accomplishments, as well as raise awareness of the challenges transgender people still face.”

Since its inception, TDOV has been observed annually in numerous countries all over the world. Each year, transgender people and their allies come together on this day through both online and community events to celebrate transgender people and to work towards creating a more inclusive world for transgender and non-binary people.

U.S. President Joe Biden signed Proclamation 1016 declaring Transgender Day of Visibility on March 31st. In the Proclamation President Biden stated, “Today, we honor and celebrate the achievements and resiliency of transgender individuals and communities. Transgender Day of Visibility recognizes the generations of struggle, activism, and courage that have brought our country closer to full equality for transgender and gender non-binary people in the United States and around the world.” The Proclamation goes on to say “Vice President Harris and I affirm that transgender Americans make our Nation more prosperous, vibrant, and strong. I urge my fellow Americans to join us in uplifting the worth and dignity of every transgender person.”

How Can I Participate?

There are many ways you can participate in TDOV. Here are some ideas:

Share your story. Transgender people are encouraged to share their stories and experiences with the world. This can help other transgender people feel less alone and give others a better understanding of what it means to be transgender.

Educate yourself and others about transgender issues and transgender people. This can help create a more inclusive and understanding world for transgender people.

Support transgender-led organizations that are working to make the world a better place for transgender people. By supporting these organizations, you can help ensure that transgender voices are heard and that transgender rights are protected.

Celebrate transgender people and their accomplishments. This can help transgender people feel recognized and valued, and it can inspire others to achieve their own goals.
